Beautiful essay around friendship with trees, Minaz! They are such memory-keepers for us if we keep our connection with them. I empathize with the grief that comes with seeing the world change in a way that offers less nuture to our children in the form of natural places to connect with than what we had. I grew up in NY state and now live in Massachusetts. We've been lucky, really, but many are not.
Absolutely beautiful post!!! Thank you so much for including my work!! I'm honored!!! The tree I grew up with and loved dearly was a pear tree in my grandmother's yard. I would climb it and sit or lay in its arms as I read my library books. When the pears were ripe a snack was always within easy reach. Such a lovely thing to have kind generous trees to grow up with - i wish all children were so lucky as we were!! Thank you again!!! 💚
Hi Minaz, your post today made me think of how life is changing here in Australia as well. Our Grandchildren live a different life, but our Great grandchildren will never know the life we lived, such a sad state of affairs. In my mind anyway, they won’t know any different though. I think about the life my parents lived which was comfortable but nowhere near how we live today, and the expectations of the young ones who believe they should have what we took a lifetime to achieve. Is it the same in India?
Pretty much! Lifestyle is changing fast which is great so far our connection to nature is not compromised. Everything is measured in terms of economic benefits only. That's where the problem lies.
You are right. Trees are our silent spectators and if we respond to them they can become our good friends too. One mango tree in a home opposite to ours is one such in my life. We took a room on rent to get our home constructed. And this was beginning of our friendship from that side. After 35 years of our acquaintance I got spiritual experience, so I recognised that it was the only friend which remained with me in all my ups and downs of life so I went to it and hugged it!
That years it was leaden with a lot of mangos that too out of season!
You are welcome Sue and the honour is completely mine :) Your childhood connection with the pear tree is so endearing. I can already imagine you illustrating this memory :))
This is so beautiful— friendship with trees 💙
So glad you liked it :)

Thanks so much Aditi :)

Thanks for reading and for your comments. I love to imagine a world where we all have access to healing natural spaces.
